Budapest, October 2007

Inside Budapest's Parliament

Now part of the opulent Boscolo New York Palace hotel, the lavish Café New York was the haunt of Budapest's intelligentsia. One of Europe's original literary cafés -- now a hotel lobby for the bored rich toting Louis Vuitton bags. Read more about its impressive former clientele here.

A perfect Wiener schnitzel at one of my favourite restaurants in the world: Bock Bisztró. Named for one of Hungary's foremost winemakers, it is truly an oenophile's delight.

Atop Gellért Hill

Special mention to the unforgettable Szechenyi Baths, which we didn't photograph (due to being in our swimwear at the time). A series of indoor pools ranging from hot to freezing, and a large heated outdoor swimming pool in the shadow of the majestic domed building. Watch the old men play chess between the rising steam, or get sucked into the whirlpool and feel like a kid again.
